OpenAI Launches Admin Plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex
OpenAI's Admin plugin brings analytics, member management, and approval workflows into one ChatGPT conversation, keeping existing permissions intact.

Why it matters
- OpenAI launched the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex, combining admin analytics and supported actions in one conversation.
- The plugin works within each user's existing role and permissions and does not grant broader access; admins can review broader-impact actions before they apply.
- OpenAI's internal IT team says deployed ChatGPT Work workflows in Slack resolved about 45% of support ticket volume, even as support volume roughly doubled.
OpenAI has released the Admin plugin for ChatGPT Work and Codex, a tool that lets workspace administrators analyze data, update settings, and act on requests inside a single conversation. Admins can ask a question, explore the details, make an authorized change, and confirm the result—without writing complex prompts or switching between tools.
The release targets a concrete pain point: managing a growing workspace today means moving between analytics, settings, and reports to understand issues and take action. OpenAI says this makes routine admin work slower and harder to complete consistently. By bringing admin analytics and supported actions together, the company argues, the Admin plugin helps teams keep growing workspaces secure, productive, and within budget.
What admins can do
OpenAI lists four categories of day-to-day tasks the plugin supports:
- Understand adoption and usage. Admins can review activity and credit usage across ChatGPT Work and Codex, identify where additional enablement may help, and see when members or groups are approaching credit limits.
- Manage members and groups. Add or remove members, update groups, and complete routine onboarding, offboarding, and team changes.
- Manage access and permissions. Review effective permissions, diagnose access issues, and control feature or model access by role or group.
- Manage usage limits and spending requests. Adjust limits for members, groups, and workspaces; review requests against current usage; and approve or deny them with context.
Automating recurring workflows
The plugin also handles recurring checks and high-volume requests without custom engineering. OpenAI says these automations reduce manual monitoring, apply policies more consistently, and let admins focus on decisions that require their judgment.
Two examples stand out. The plugin can route pending usage requests to Slack or Microsoft Teams, where authorized reviewers can approve or deny them inside tools they already use. It can also monitor feature-access requests and automatically grant access when requests meet predefined criteria, while routing exceptions for review. OpenAI emphasizes that admins remain in control throughout, and each workflow confirms when requested changes have been applied.
Permissions stay in place
The Admin plugin works within each user's existing role and permissions and does not grant broader access, according to OpenAI. Behind each request, the plugin maps the admin's instructions to the appropriate supported read or write action and returns a structured result. It exposes Admin Console capabilities to ChatGPT Work and Codex as permission-aware tools while honoring workspace policies and approval requirements.
For each change, admins can see what they requested, whether the action completed, and what changed. They can review actions with broader impact before those actions are applied.
OpenAI dogfoods its own tool
OpenAI says its own IT team already runs workspace administration through the plugin. The team uses it to ask questions that drill into data and generate reports and insights.
"The value is far beyond faster reporting. The Admin plugin connects the question to the next supported action, whether that is checking someone's effective permissions, updating a group, changing a usage limit, or reviewing a spending request. It gives admins a faster way to understand what is happening and take action, while preserving the same permissions and controls we already use," said Kunal Malik, Head of Global IT at OpenAI.
The company shared two internal results that indicate where this pattern of AI-assisted IT operations is heading:
- In Slack, a ChatGPT Work agent handles employee IT requests, triages and actions support tickets, retrieves context, checks approved policies, completes supported tasks, and escalates exceptions. At the time of reporting, deployed workflows resolved about 45% of ticket volume.
- ChatGPT Work let the IT team turn support ticket data and history into operational health dashboards, giving continuous visibility into service performance. That visibility eliminated the backlog and changed how the team operates. Instead of reacting to service issues, the team now uses live data to set priorities and plan for demand—even as support volume roughly doubled.
How to install it
Setup takes a few steps, according to OpenAI. Admins first enable the plugin in ChatGPT workspace settings, then install it from the Plugins directory in ChatGPT Work on the web or desktop app.
The launch signals OpenAI's push to make ChatGPT Work and Codex the operating surface for enterprise administration, not just a chat interface—and the ~45% ticket-resolution figure from its own IT team is the number rivals and buyers will watch.
