OpenAI ships education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex

OpenAI has released three education plugins for ChatGPT Work and Codex: one for K-12 educators, one for college educators, and one for college students. The plugins are available now through ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments, timed to the fall return of students and educators to classrooms and campuses.

A plugin, in OpenAI's definition, is a package of apps, role-specific skills, instructions, and common workflows. The idea is to let students and educators start working immediately instead of constructing complex prompts on their own. The plugins connect to materials and tools users already rely on — documents, course materials, calendars, and other approved apps — and use that context to move what OpenAI describes as "from curiosity to practice, lesson idea to classroom material, and project concept to execution."

The release matters because of scale. OpenAI says more than 200 million young adults ages 18-24 now use ChatGPT every week, making them some of the stronger mainstream users of the product. Yet the company reports a widening global "capability overhang" among college-age users: the gap between what AI tools can do and how people actually use them. Even advanced student users leverage ChatGPT's capabilities roughly 90-99% less than power users, according to OpenAI's figures.

What the plugins do

The K-12 Educator plugin, developed alongside K-12 educators, helps teachers plan and create for their classrooms. It can work with materials and tools teachers already use to create differentiated resources, design interactive visuals, and surface actionable insights. It integrates with Learning Commons, a philanthropic organization that funds and builds public AI datasets and resources, allowing teachers to create materials aligned to local academic standards, the granular learning components beneath them, and the progressions that connect prior and future learning. OpenAI emphasizes that teachers remain in control of pedagogical decisions, grading, and agentic actions.

The College Educator plugin targets course design, teaching, and academic planning. Faculty can update syllabi, create interactive websites or multimedia assessments, adapt materials for diverse learners, or package content for their LMS. With connected calendars, documents, and other approved tools, instructors can work across teaching, research, and everyday tasks without recreating the context for each new project.

The College Student plugin helps students turn existing coursework into personalized learning experiences. Students can work with a guided tutor, practice difficult concepts, and create study guides, quizzes, flashcards, and interactive visual explanations from sources they choose. OpenAI says the plugin was designed with university students across majors, geographies, and levels of AI fluency, and draws on learning science to prioritize deeper understanding and build stronger study habits.

OpenAI frames the underlying principle plainly: "AI should support learning, not shortcut it, and the best learning experiences keep educators and students in control."

The institutional foundation

The plugins build on OpenAI's institutional products. ChatGPT Edu, introduced in 2024, gives educational institutions managed workspaces with enterprise-level privacy, security, and administrative controls. ChatGPT for Teachers, introduced in 2025, is free for verified U.S. K-12 educators and districts and offers education-grade protections and compliance features. District leaders can claim their domain to bring educators into a shared workspace with oversight that includes FERPA-related protections and a data privacy agreement.

Deployments to date include K-12 districts Houston ISD in Texas, Fairfax in Virginia, and Fulton in Georgia, plus hundreds of college and university campuses — among them the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, The University of Texas at Austin, and the California State University system.

OpenAI says structured access narrows the capability gap. Across ChatGPT Edu deployments, students develop more advanced patterns of use over time, outperforming free users across nearly every capability and moving closer to power-user behavior, particularly in analysis, calculation, and learning.

Partner programs expand the reach

The plugin launch comes alongside a set of education partnerships and programs.

OpenAI is the founding partner in the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative with the American Federation of Teachers to equip 400,000 K-12 educators — about one in every 10 teachers in the US — to use AI effectively and lead in shaping how AI is taught in classrooms.

For college students, the new OpenAI Student Collective is a student-led community for learning and building with AI. Applications are open for Campus Leads. Partnerships with platforms like Handshake connect student skills to internships and early-career opportunities.

With the Walton Family Foundation, OpenAI Academy is convening more than 1,600 K-12 teachers, administrators, and district leaders across eight U.S. cities for free in-person, hands-on workshops on applying AI to real classroom challenges.

Internationally, OpenAI's Education for Countries program works with governments on locally tailored deployments. In Estonia, ChatGPT Edu now reaches more than 20,000 students and 4,600 teachers, alongside a longitudinal research initiative with the University of Tartu and Stanford.

For researchers, the new ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program gives eligible researchers 12 months of free Pro-level access to apply ChatGPT Work and Codex to scientific work in a secure workspace.

Why it matters

The stakes are competitive as well as pedagogical. OpenAI is betting that prepackaged, role-specific workflows — rather than blank-prompt interfaces — will drive adoption in education, a market where institutional trust, FERPA compliance, and teacher control determine procurement. The capability-overhang data suggests the bet addresses a real gap: students use the tool heavily but shallowly, and structured deployments measurably shift usage toward power-user behavior.

OpenAI says it will keep building alongside the education community throughout the school year, with new tools, expanded training and research, and evidence-based insights — with the educator and student plugins available now in ChatGPT Edu and ChatGPT for Teachers district deployments.
