Why it matters

  • ChatGPT Ads hit $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch, with tens of thousands of advertisers.
  • Self-service Ads Manager access launches across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa; ads are available in over 40 countries.
  • CPC and outcome-optimized bidding account for the majority of campaigns; an ecommerce advertiser reported 3x return on ad spend over 28 days.

ChatGPT Ads has reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch, OpenAI announced. The platform now serves tens of thousands of advertisers, and starting later today, advertisers can buy ChatGPT ads directly through Ads Manager across India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The number matters beyond OpenAI's own ledger. Advertising has become one of the four pillars of OpenAI's diversified business model, alongside consumer subscriptions, enterprise offerings, and usage-based APIs. Together, these offerings give people, developers, and businesses choice in how they access OpenAI products, including an advertising-supported free tier that helps keep ChatGPT available to more than 1 billion weekly active users. A billion-dollar ads business built inside a conversational AI product in under seven months signals that AI assistants are becoming a genuine advertising channel — a shift with direct stakes for Google, Meta, and every company that sells attention for a living.

Where decisions take shape

OpenAI's pitch to advertisers rests on a claim about user intent. People come to ChatGPT with clear goals. They might be choosing software for their business, learning a new language, planning a renovation, looking for a job, or exploring a new hobby.

They explain what they want to accomplish, what matters to them, and the constraints they face. ChatGPT can help them frame the decision, establish criteria, understand alternatives, and move closer to taking action. Discovery, consideration, and decision-making come together in a single experience, according to the company.

That framing positions ChatGPT not as a search replacement but as a decision-making environment — the point in the funnel where money changes hands. ChatGPT Ads, OpenAI says, creates the possibility for marketers to contribute useful and relevant information to this experience.

The targeting mechanism is conversational. OpenAI's ads system uses the context of the current conversation to show an ad relevant to what someone is exploring. Depending on the country and a user's settings, the ads system may also use context from the user's broader ChatGPT experience. This allows ads to reflect both what someone is asking about in the moment and, where enabled, their broader interests and preferences.

Building around principles — and guardrails

OpenAI has moved deliberately, the company says, guided by its published ads principles. "Protecting the trust people place in ChatGPT remains our North Star," the announcement states.

The guardrails are explicit. Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT's answers. Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides. Advertisers do not receive access to people's private conversations, and users can control how their ad experience is personalized.

That last set of claims will face scrutiny. The distinction between ads that don't influence answers and a model trained and operated by the same company selling the ads is one regulators and researchers will keep testing. OpenAI says that throughout the global rollout, the measures it tracks across trust, relevance, and overall experience have remained strong — giving the company, in its own words, confidence to expand the platform while continuing to learn and improve.

From managed pilot to global platform

The expansion is happening on two fronts: geography and accessibility.

ChatGPT Ads are now available in over 40 countries through the OpenAI Ads Solutions team and the company's agency and technology partners. Self-service access through Ads Manager, launching later today, extends that footprint to India, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa.

The client base is becoming increasingly global. Advertisers outside the United States represent a growing share of revenue, and many of OpenAI's largest clients now use ChatGPT Ads to reach potential customers across multiple markets.

The advertiser base is broadening as well. OpenAI began with a managed-sales, agency, and partner-led model. Since then, it has expanded its ecosystem to more than 50 technology and measurement partners.

The introduction of Ads Manager in May opened the platform to small and medium-sized businesses, which now represent a material share of the business. OpenAI says it wants to make advertising in ChatGPT more accessible to SMBs and startups, giving businesses of every size an opportunity to reach customers as they explore options and make decisions.

A maturing ad stack

ChatGPT Ads has also evolved into a more sophisticated advertising platform in its short life.

CPC and outcome-optimized bidding now account for the majority of campaigns. Pixel and Conversions API have become important foundations for measurement and optimization. Capabilities such as product feeds, platform and geographic targeting, and custom audiences are helping advertisers reach the customers most relevant to their businesses.

For anyone who has run campaigns on Google or Meta, that feature list reads as table stakes for a modern ad platform. OpenAI is rebuilding the standard toolkit — conversion tracking, feed-based commerce formats, audience segmentation — inside a conversational interface.

The company points to early outcome data. One recent example: an ecommerce advertiser achieved a 3x return on ad spend across its campaigns over 28 days. A technology partner reported that more than 80% of ad-driven ChatGPT traffic is from new customers. These are advertiser- and partner-reported figures from OpenAI's own announcement, not independent audits — but the new-customer share, if it holds as the platform scales, is the kind of number that moves marketing budgets.

What's next

OpenAI says its focus remains on expanding access to AI while staying true to its principles.

The next phase of growth will bring ChatGPT Ads to more markets and introduce additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities. The company will also explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT — language that hints at ad experiences woven into conversations rather than placed beside them.

The strategic bet is straightforward. As more people turn to ChatGPT to explore needs, evaluate options, and make decisions, OpenAI sees an opportunity to help them discover products and services — and to help businesses of every size grow and thrive. The question now is pace. A $1 billion run rate in under 200 days makes ChatGPT Ads one of the fastest-scaling ad products in the industry's history, and with self-service buying opening across four major regions, OpenAI has removed the sales-team bottleneck that constrained its first six months.
