Why it matters

  • Instant Checkout is live for U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users buying from U.S. Etsy sellers, with over a million Shopify merchants including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori coming soon.
  • The Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe, is being open-sourced at agenticcommerce.dev so merchants and developers can build integrations.
  • Product results remain organic and unsponsored; merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases, while the service is free for users and Stripe merchants can enable agentic payments in as little as one line of code.

More than 700 million weekly ChatGPT users are getting a buy button. OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout, a feature that lets U.S. users purchase products directly inside the chat interface, starting with U.S. Etsy sellers and powered by a new open standard called the Agentic Commerce Protocol, co-developed with Stripe.

The rollout is staged. U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can buy from U.S. Etsy sellers now. More than a million Shopify merchants — including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori — are "coming soon." Today the feature supports single-item purchases only. OpenAI says multi-item carts, more merchants, and additional regions are next.

The stakes are considerable. If ChatGPT becomes a place where people complete purchases rather than just ask questions, OpenAI positions itself as a transaction layer sitting between hundreds of millions of consumers and merchants — a role currently occupied by search engines, marketplaces, and payment providers. OpenAI is also open-sourcing the underlying protocol at agenticcommerce.dev, a move designed to make the standard attractive to merchants, developers, and potentially rival AI platforms.

How Instant Checkout works

When a user asks a shopping question — OpenAI's examples include "best running shoes under $100" or "gifts for a ceramics lover" — ChatGPT surfaces product results from across the web. The company states these results are organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the query.

If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user taps "Buy," confirms order, shipping, and payment details, and completes the purchase without leaving the chat. Existing subscribers can pay with the card on file or use other card and express payment options.

Merchants keep their existing infrastructure. Orders, payments, and fulfillment run through the merchant's own systems. OpenAI describes ChatGPT's role as acting as the user's AI agent, securely passing information between user and merchant — "just like a digital personal shopper would."

The business model: merchants pay a small fee on completed purchases. The service is free for users, does not affect prices, and does not influence product results, according to OpenAI. Instant Checkout items get no preference in rankings. When multiple merchants sell the same product, ChatGPT weighs availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and whether Instant Checkout is enabled — the last factor framed as optimizing the user experience rather than a paid boost.

The Agentic Commerce Protocol

The Agentic Commerce Protocol is the connective tissue. OpenAI describes it as an open standard for AI commerce that lets AI agents, people, and businesses work together to complete purchases, designed with three goals: work across platforms, payment processors, and business types; integrate quickly without backend changes; and keep merchants in control as the merchant of record across the entire purchase journey — from fulfillment and returns to support and communication.

When an order is placed, ChatGPT sends the necessary details to the merchant's backend using the protocol. The merchant accepts or declines the order, processes payment through their existing provider, and handles fulfillment and support exactly as they do today.

For Stripe merchants, the technical lift is minimal: enabling agentic payments takes as little as one line of code. Merchants on other payment processors can still participate, either through Stripe's new Shared Payment Token API or by adopting the Delegated Payments Spec within the Agentic Commerce Protocol — in both cases without switching processors. OpenAI has published documentation at developers.openai.com/commerce and opened a merchant application process at chatgpt.com/merchants.

Trust as the design constraint

OpenAI frames the launch around control and data minimization. Users explicitly confirm each step before any action is taken. Payment relies on encrypted tokens authorized only for specific amounts and specific merchants, with user permission. Only the information required to complete an order reaches the merchant.

Those commitments matter beyond optics. Agentic commerce asks users to hand purchase authority to an AI system, and regulators on both sides of the Atlantic are scrutinizing how AI platforms rank, recommend, and monetize commerce. OpenAI's insistence that rankings stay unsponsored and that Instant Checkout status is only one ranking factor among several is a direct answer to the conflict-of-interest questions that have shadowed search-driven commerce for two decades.

Stripe President of Technology and Business Will Gaybrick cast the partnership in expansive terms: "Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI. That means re-architecting today's commerce systems and creating new AI-powered experiences for billions of people. We're proud to power Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and co-develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help businesses and AI platforms build the future of commerce."

Just the start

The current launch is deliberately narrow: one country, one marketplace at launch, single items only. But the direction is clear. As AI becomes a primary interface for how people discover, decide, and buy, OpenAI argues the Agentic Commerce Protocol provides the foundation connecting people and businesses for the next era of commerce — and by open-sourcing it, the company is betting that the standard, not just the product, becomes the industry default.
