Why it matters

  • Instacart is the first app to offer checkout directly within ChatGPT, powered by OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol.
  • Users can build and pay for a grocery cart in a single ChatGPT conversation, then Instacart handles picking and delivery.
  • OpenAI says more than 1 million business customers use its platform, with partners including Walmart, PayPal, Target, and Salesforce.

Instacart is now the first app to let users complete a full grocery purchase, including payment, without leaving ChatGPT. The integration, built on OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol, lets users move from meal idea to doorstep delivery inside a single conversation.

The experience works through OpenAI's Instant Checkout. A user can type something like "Help me shop for apple pie ingredients on Instacart," and ChatGPT surfaces the Instacart app. ChatGPT also suggests the app when users mention food, recipes, or meal ideas. After signing in with an Instacart account, the app finds items from local retailers and assembles a ready-to-review cart using OpenAI's models. Users pay directly within the app in ChatGPT—no tab switching—and Instacart then assigns a shopper to pick and deliver the order through its platform.

"Instacart and ChatGPT are redefining what's possible in AI-powered shopping," said Anirban Kundu, Chief Technology Officer at Instacart. "Built on Agentic Commerce Protocol, this experience brings intelligent, real-time support to one of the most essential parts of daily life: getting groceries to feed your family. Together, we're creating a seamless and secure way for people to turn simple conversations into real-world action—helping customers go from inspiration to a full cart delivered from the store to their door with ease."

Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, framed the launch as part of a broader strategy to connect conversational AI to real services. "With the Instacart app directly in ChatGPT, users can go from meal planning to checkout in a single, seamless conversation," Turley said. "It's another step toward bringing our vision to life—where AI delivers helpful suggestions and connects directly to real-world services, saving people time and effort in their everyday lives."

The stakes are straightforward: grocery is one of the largest and most frequently repeated consumer purchase categories, and agentic checkout moves AI assistants from answering questions to completing transactions. For Instacart, embedding its marketplace directly in ChatGPT defends its position against other retailers racing to plug into conversational interfaces. For OpenAI, it is another step in turning ChatGPT into a commerce platform rather than just a chatbot.

A partnership with history

The app builds on a longstanding relationship between the two companies. Instacart was one of the earliest contributors to OpenAI's Operator research preview, providing feedback to help ensure the technology addressed real-world needs while respecting established norms, according to the announcement.

Instacart continues to use OpenAI APIs alongside its proprietary technologies to power personalized recommendations that help customers save time and find food inspiration. Internally, the company runs ChatGPT Enterprise to support employee workflows and uses OpenAI's Codex to power an internal coding agent.

OpenAI's enterprise push

The Instacart deal extends OpenAI's growing roster of large-enterprise partnerships, which already includes Accenture, Walmart, Salesforce, PayPal, Intuit, Target, Thermo Fisher, BNY, Morgan Stanley, and BBVA. OpenAI says more than 1 million business customers worldwide now use its platform directly, calling it the fastest-growing business platform in history.

The rollout signals where agentic commerce is heading: if grocery checkout works inside a chat window, the same pattern can extend to most routine consumer purchases. Expect rivals in both retail and AI to answer with comparable integrations as OpenAI keeps converting conversations into transactions.
