Why it matters

  • OpenAI announced multi-year Frontier Alliances with BCG, McKinsey, Accenture and Capgemini to deploy its Frontier AI coworker platform across enterprises.
  • OpenAI says the limiting factor for enterprise AI value is not model intelligence but how agents are built and run in organizations.
  • Accenture has already begun equipping tens of thousands of professionals with ChatGPT Enterprise — the largest number upskilled through OpenAI Certifications; Frontier is currently available to a limited set of customers.

OpenAI has signed multi-year partnerships with Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Company, Accenture and Capgemini to deploy its Frontier platform inside large enterprises, betting that the next bottleneck in business AI is not model intelligence but how organizations build and run agents.

The alliances, announced under the name Frontier Alliances, pair OpenAI's Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team with four of the world's largest consultancies. Each partner will define strategy, integrate systems, redesign workflows and scale deployment globally for customers adopting Frontier, OpenAI's platform for building, deploying and managing AI coworkers.

OpenAI framed the rationale plainly. "The limiting factor for seeing value from AI in enterprises isn't model intelligence, it's how agents are built and run in their organizations," the company said in its announcement. An AI coworker built on Frontier, OpenAI explained, can resolve a customer issue end-to-end by pulling context from the CRM, checking policies, filing the update and escalating only when needed.

The stakes are considerable. Enterprise deployment has become the main battleground for AI vendors, and OpenAI is countering rivals not with a bigger model but with a delivery apparatus: certified practice groups inside the big consultancies, technical support from OpenAI, roadmap insight and direct access to its product and research teams.

Each partner is investing in dedicated practice groups and building teams certified on OpenAI technology. OpenAI will support them with technical resources, roadmap insight, and access to its product and research teams.

Strategy and change management: McKinsey and BCG

OpenAI splits the four partners into two camps. McKinsey and BCG will focus on leadership alignment, operating model redesign and adoption — the "experts in strategy, AI, and change management," as OpenAI puts it.

McKinsey brings experience leading enterprise-wide operating change, helping leadership teams align on where to focus, how to redesign operating models and how to embed intelligence into day-to-day work. Through QuantumBlack, its AI arm, McKinsey pairs technical expertise with industry insight to help global clients redesign processes and integrate agents across their highest-value workflows.

McKinsey Global Managing Partner Bob Sternfels cast the partnership as an answer to a boardroom problem. "CEOs and business leaders face unprecedented challenges in capturing value with agentic AI. To scale, they must rewire their businesses, reimagining domains and evolving how their people work, build capabilities and lead change," Sternfels said. "McKinsey's deep domain expertise and experience with high-impact tech transformations, infused with OpenAI's leading Frontier technology, will help clients close this gap and capture real value."

BCG brings a track record in enterprise transformation, helping organizations scale AI by aligning strategy with operating model redesign, governance and change management. Its tech build and design unit, BCG X, helps clients build, deploy and drive adoption of AI across their most critical workflows.

BCG CEO Christoph Schweizer emphasized that technology alone does not carry a transformation. "AI alone does not drive transformation. It must be linked to strategy, built into redesigned processes, and adopted at scale with aligned incentives and culture to deliver sustained outcomes," Schweizer said. "Our expanded partnership combines OpenAI's Frontier platform with BCG's deep industry, functional, and tech expertise and BCG X's build-and-scale capabilities to drive measurable impact with safeguards from day one."

The word "safeguards" signals that governance concerns remain central to enterprise agentic AI adoption, and consultancies are positioning themselves as the layer that manages that risk.

End-to-end delivery: Accenture and Capgemini

Accenture and Capgemini form the second camp: full-service transformation partners that advise on strategy and then wire Frontier into the systems and data enterprises actually run on — securely and reliably.

Accenture architects and delivers end-to-end enterprise AI solutions across the full customer lifecycle, from initial strategy through modernizing enterprise data architectures, scaled deployment, change management and long-term operation. The company already has a head start on OpenAI's ecosystem: it has begun equipping tens of thousands of its professionals with ChatGPT Enterprise, which OpenAI describes as the largest number of professionals upskilled through OpenAI Certifications.

Accenture Chair and CEO Julie Sweet framed the deal around execution rather than models. "We're excited to deepen our work with OpenAI as a Frontier Alliance partner to help clients turn AI into real outcomes," Sweet said. "Business transformation requires more than great models - it requires end-to-end execution across technology, data, security, and change management. Together, we'll help organizations operationalize AI across the enterprise - responsibly and at scale."

Capgemini brings deep sector experience, industry solutions and technology-driven capabilities to accelerate AI-powered business transformation. Its implementation expertise across cloud, applications, data and modernization is intended to ensure robust AI foundations and deliver measurable outcomes faster. The company will help clients embed Frontier throughout their organization and put in place the operating processes needed to run agents consistently at scale.

Capgemini CEO Aiman Ezzat positioned the alliance as a market position, not just a services contract. "AI is reshaping every industry, and we intend to lead that transformation," Ezzat said. "Partnering with OpenAI on Frontier positions us at the cutting edge of what's possible and enables us to deliver breakthrough innovation faster than ever before."

Limited availability, wider rollout ahead

Frontier remains available today only to a limited set of customers, with greater availability coming over the next few months, according to OpenAI.

The deal structure matters for how enterprise AI gets bought and sold. Rather than selling software directly to every CIO, OpenAI is distributing Frontier through the consultancies that already control large transformation budgets — the same channel model that earlier enterprise technologies used to reach scale. With four global integrators now building certified practices around Frontier, OpenAI has converted a product launch into a distribution network, and the pace of AI coworker deployment in large enterprises will now depend heavily on how fast these partners can retrain their armies of consultants.
