OpenAI Launches First Certification Courses Inside ChatGPT

OpenAI has launched its first two certification courses: AI Foundations, a full learning experience delivered directly inside ChatGPT through pilot programs with major employers, and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, available today on Coursera. The courses mark the first concrete step toward OpenAI's stated goal of certifying 10 million Americans in AI skills by 2030.

The company first announced its plan for OpenAI Certifications and the OpenAI Jobs Platform last September as part of a broader effort to expand economic opportunity. With these launches, OpenAI is moving from vision to product — and turning ChatGPT itself into a training environment.

Learning inside ChatGPT

AI Foundations teaches core, practical AI skills that apply across roles and industries. For the first time, according to OpenAI, a complete learning experience runs inside ChatGPT, where learners practice real tasks, receive feedback in context, and reflect on their work in a single environment. "ChatGPT acts as the tutor, the practice space, and the feedback loop," the company said.

Completing AI Foundations earns a certification verifying job-ready AI skills. Additional courses and a hands-on project build toward a full OpenAI Certification, a broader credential OpenAI says demonstrates those skills in real-world settings and supports career growth or transition.

The pilot partners read like a cross-section of the US economy: Walmart, John Deere, Lowe's, Boston Consulting Group, Hearst, Russell Reynolds Associates, Upwork, Elevance Health, Accenture, the Office of the Governor of Delaware, and Choose New Jersey. Coursera, ETS, and Credly by Pearson will help ensure the courses and certifications meet standards for learning design, psychometric rigor, and real-world impact, so learners earn portable evidence of their skills.

OpenAI says it will work with the initial partners over the next couple of months to learn what works and what needs improvement, then expand access. College students in the ChatGPT Lab get early access to AI Foundations, and OpenAI is piloting certifications with Arizona State University and the California State University system — staff, faculty, and students — to create pathways for students to demonstrate AI skills to employers.

A course built for K-12 teachers

ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers targets K-12 educators. OpenAI cites Gallup data showing three in five teachers already use an AI tool, many relying on it to save time, personalize lesson plans, and support students. The course covers how ChatGPT works, how to navigate and personalize the tool, and how to apply it to classroom and administrative tasks.

The course launches on Coursera first, with plans to bring the experience directly into ChatGPT and ChatGPT for Teachers in early 2026. More teacher-focused certifications will follow.

The program builds on existing education efforts: a free custom ChatGPT for educators, a partnership with the American Federation of Teachers to equip 400,000 K-12 educators with practical AI skills, and tools such as study mode.

The economic argument

OpenAI frames the stakes in numbers. More than 800 million people use ChatGPT each week. The company cites research from PwC showing workers with AI skills earn about 50% more than those without them. OpenAI acknowledges the disruption AI will bring and positions the courses as preparation: "while OpenAI can't eliminate that disruption, we can help people everywhere prepare to navigate it successfully."

The two programs connect learning, certification, and economic opportunity in one journey, and lay the foundation for the upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform. OpenAI says it will continue collaborating with Indeed and is introducing a new partnership with Upwork, which will support training people in AI and making it easier for businesses to hire workers with specific skills.

With pilots running across Fortune 500 employers, state government, and public universities, the next signal to watch is how quickly OpenAI moves from pilot cohorts to broad public access — and whether employers treat its certifications as credible hiring currency.
