OpenAI Launches ChatGPT for Teachers, Free Through June 2028

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teachers, a dedicated workspace for U.S. K-12 educators, and made it free for verified teachers through June 2028.

The company framed the offer around scale: 800 million people use ChatGPT each week, and teachers are among the earliest and most active adopters. OpenAI cited a Gallup finding that three in five teachers already use an AI tool, and that those who use one weekly report saving hours each week — time they can spend with students.

The stakes for OpenAI are commercial as much as educational. ChatGPT's adoption in classrooms has outpaced most institutional policies, and school districts have raised persistent questions about student data privacy under FERPA. With this release, OpenAI is positioning itself as the default AI platform for U.S. schools before competitors lock in the same relationships.

What teachers get

ChatGPT for Teachers bundles the most capable consumer features — unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto, search, file uploads, connectors, and image generation — into a workspace designed for classroom materials and student information.

OpenAI says anything shared in the workspace is not used to train its models by default. The company built the product to protect student data and to help schools meet FERPA requirements.

Other features include:

• Personalization: Teachers can tell ChatGPT to remember their grade level, curriculum, and preferred format, with control over those settings.
• Tool integrations: Presentations built with Canva inside ChatGPT, plus lesson plans and files pulled in from Google Drive or Microsoft 365.
• Shared prompts: Ready-to-use ideas and prompts from teachers already using ChatGPT, surfaced directly under the message composer.
• Collaboration: Custom GPTs for school- or district-wide templates, and shared projects for co-planning lessons and presentations.
• Admin controls: Domain claiming, role-based access controls, and SAML SSO for school and district leaders.

Verification is handled by SheerID, OpenAI's third-party partner, which confirms educator status through a secure process. After the free period ends in June 2028, OpenAI says it may adjust pricing but aims to keep the product affordable, with advance notice of any changes so teachers and schools can decide whether to continue.

An AI Literacy Blueprint and an AFT partnership

Alongside the product, OpenAI released an AI Literacy Blueprint, a document intended to give school leaders and policymakers a path for supporting teacher-led, responsible AI use.

The release builds on OpenAI's partnership with the American Federation of Teachers to equip 400,000 K-12 educators with practical AI skills, and on collaborations with Ministries of Education in Estonia and Greece. OpenAI also points to broader academic work across K-12 and higher education, including tools for learners such as ChatGPT's study mode.

A first cohort of districts covering nearly 150,000 staff

To guide the rollout, OpenAI is working with a first cohort of districts representing nearly 150,000 teachers and staff. The districts are sharing classroom needs and implementation insights, and OpenAI says their feedback will shape how it improves the product over time.

The cohort includes Capistrano Unified School District (CA), Dallas Independent School District (TX), Fairfax County Public Schools (VA), Fulton County Schools (GA), Houston Independent School District (TX), Humble Independent School District (TX), Idaho Digital Learning Alliance (ID), KIPP Miami Public Schools (FL), KIPP New Jersey Public Schools (NJ), KIPP Public Schools Northern California (CA), Lynwood Unified School District (CA), Prince William County Public Schools (VA), Region One Education Service Center (TX), School District U-46 (IL), Township High School District 211 (IL), and Waukee Community School District (IA).

The Delaware Department of Education has also adopted ChatGPT for its own employees and is supporting districts and charters statewide in exploring implementation.

Adoption, but on whose terms

OpenAI's argument is that AI in education works best when teachers lead — and that teachers need a private space to get comfortable with the tools before bringing them into classrooms. The company is betting that free access for millions of educators, paired with district partnerships and a policy blueprint, will normalize ChatGPT in schools before pricing kicks in.

The open question is what happens in June 2028, when the free window closes and school districts — many of which will have rebuilt lesson planning and collaboration workflows around the product — face OpenAI's first real pricing decision for the education market.
