OpenAI Pulls the Plug on ChatGPT for WhatsApp

ChatGPT will stop working on WhatsApp after January 15, 2026. OpenAI has begun notifying users of the shutdown and is pointing them toward its own apps and website as the replacement.

The company says existing users can keep their conversations going by linking their ChatGPT account and continuing across devices. "Learn how to link your ChatGPT account and continue your conversations across devices," OpenAI advises in its notice. That means chat history tied to an OpenAI account can carry over — but the WhatsApp entry point itself goes away.

The move ends one of OpenAI's most frictionless distribution channels. WhatsApp support let users chat with the assistant from any phone with the messaging app installed, including devices without the standalone ChatGPT app and markets where downloading new apps is a hurdle. With roughly three billion monthly active users, WhatsApp gave OpenAI reach into regions where it lacked native app penetration.

Now OpenAI is consolidating access around its first-party surfaces: the ChatGPT app and chatgpt.com. That aligns with the company's broader pattern of steering usage toward its own platforms, where it controls the experience, account data and monetization path.

For users, the practical task is straightforward. Before the January 15 cutoff, link the WhatsApp number to a ChatGPT account so history and preferences follow the transition. Anyone who has been using the service without an account will need to create one to keep their threads.

The stakes here are modest for OpenAI — WhatsApp was one channel among many — but they are real for users who relied on it as their only way to reach the assistant. The shutdown also narrows the number of messaging platforms where a major AI assistant is natively reachable, a shift worth watching as rivals weigh their own distribution strategies.
