OpenAI Launches Health in ChatGPT With Medical Record Connections

OpenAI has launched Health in ChatGPT, a feature that lets eligible U.S. users securely connect their medical records and Apple Health data to the chatbot in exchange for more personalized health insights.

The company announced the rollout in a post titled "Launching Health in ChatGPT." According to OpenAI, the feature is designed to help users "better understand your health" by pulling in their own health data rather than relying on general knowledge alone.

The launch marks a significant expansion of ChatGPT into territory traditionally held by patient portals, health-tracking apps, and telehealth services. It also raises the competitive stakes in the consumer health AI market, where technology companies are racing to aggregate personal medical data into conversational interfaces.

Health in ChatGPT works by letting users connect two categories of data. The first is medical records, which can be linked securely from healthcare providers. The second is Apple Health, the iPhone's native repository for activity, heart rate, sleep, and other wellness metrics collected by the device and paired wearables.

Once connected, ChatGPT can draw on that data to deliver what OpenAI describes as "more personalized insights" — moving the assistant from generic health information toward responses grounded in an individual user's actual medical history and daily measurements.

The feature is available only to "eligible U.S. users" at launch, according to the company's announcement. OpenAI did not detail in the announcement what eligibility criteria apply or when the feature might reach users outside the United States.

The emphasis on secure connection is notable. Health data carries strict regulatory protection in the United States, and any system that ingests medical records must contend with privacy expectations from both regulators and patients. OpenAI's announcement stresses that records and Apple Health data are connected securely, framing privacy safeguards as a built-in element of the feature rather than an afterthought.

For OpenAI, the move deepens ChatGPT's position as a daily utility rather than a novelty. Health questions already rank among the most common queries put to consumer AI assistants, and grounding answers in a user's own records gives ChatGPT a data advantage that generic search engines and medical reference sites cannot match.

The launch also sets up a direct collision course with Apple itself. By integrating Apple Health data into ChatGPT, OpenAI is positioning its assistant as a layer that sits on top of the iPhone maker's own health ecosystem — potentially answering questions about a user's activity and vitals before Apple's own tools do.

For now, the feature's reach is limited: U.S. users only, with an eligibility requirement that leaves the exact scope of access unclear.
