Why it matters
- ChatGPT for Financial Services ships with built-in premium data from Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, and Crunchbase, hosted and indexed by OpenAI.
- The product was shaped by a design partnership with Morgan Stanley and Evercore, focusing initially on investment banking and equity research.
- It runs GPT-6 Astra natively, includes granular citations for tracing figures to sources, firm-publishable Excel/Word/PowerPoint templates, and over 50 MCP connectors.
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, a tailored ChatGPT Work experience that combines built-in financial data with GPT-6 Astra's reasoning to help banking teams develop research, financial models, and customized client materials. The product is available now to eligible financial institutions, and OpenAI says newer models will be available out of the box as they are released.
The launch signals a sharpening of OpenAI's vertical strategy. Rather than selling a general-purpose assistant and leaving integration work to customers, OpenAI is packaging data licensing, model access, and workflow tooling into a single product aimed at one of the highest-value professional markets. The company says the product "has been shaped by our design partnership with Morgan Stanley and Evercore," a collaboration that pinpointed "where OpenAI can solve the biggest challenges for financial institutions" and guided solutions "that will help every banker in their day-to-day work."
Data first, connectors second
The core of the announcement is data. ChatGPT for Financial Services ships with premium datasets from Daloopa, PitchBook, LSEG News, and Crunchbase, covering earnings transcripts, financial statements, company fundamentals, and private companies. OpenAI says the datasets are indexed and hosted on its own infrastructure, which the company claims enables higher accuracy, better retrieval, and lower latency than customers could achieve by wiring up connectors themselves.
That hosting arrangement also enables a feature OpenAI is positioning as central to the product's credibility with analysts: granular citations. Bankers can "trace figures and claims back to their sources, and check the evidence as their analysis develops," the company says. In a P&L normalization analysis, for example, a banker can inspect the reconciliation and notes behind an adjusted EBITDA figure, see which costs were excluded, and decide how to use it in a valuation.
Teams can start working with the built-in datasets immediately, with no separate contracts to negotiate or connectors to set up — a deliberate removal of friction that has slowed enterprise AI adoption in data-heavy industries.
Existing subscriptions still count
OpenAI acknowledges that many customers already pay for terminal-grade data. It is working with S&P Capital IQ, LSEG, MSCI, Dow Jones Factiva, and Moody's on shared sign-in and entitlement integrations. Providers will be able to recognize users through their ChatGPT sign-in and enable automatic access to data those users are already entitled to under existing contracts.
For firms that prefer to keep their own connections, OpenAI says it has optimized the most-used MCP connectors in financial services for immediate use in the product, so teams "spend less time troubleshooting requests and more time on analysis." The broader connector ecosystem includes more than 50 connectors, among them Datasite, Box, Preqin, FactSet, and Intapp.
GPT-6 Astra does the analytical heavy lifting
On the model side, the product ships with GPT-6 Astra natively. OpenAI claims the model is state of the art across three capabilities it considers core to financial services work: information retrieval, financial reasoning, and artifact generation.
In practice, that means GPT-6 Astra can navigate and understand figures, tables, and supporting notes in financial documents; take inputs, run financial analysis, and draw conclusions; and then synthesize the results into documents, spreadsheets, and slides. OpenAI has also built fundamental capabilities into the product itself — researching across multiple sources, tracing figures across different periods, and interpreting annotations in public data. Once analysis is complete, teams can build interactive charts and visualizations, such as an LBO value bridge chart with underlying financial data and sources available for review.
Firm-standard templates, not generic output
Artifact quality is where much banking AI tooling has historically fallen short, and OpenAI is addressing it directly. Administrators can publish Excel, Word, and PowerPoint templates through a dedicated admin page. With firm templates and style guides configured, teams can turn their analysis into valuation models, research notes, and pitchbooks in their firm's own format and style.
OpenAI also says its design-partner work will extend beyond interface features. "Our work with partners will inform post training, product improvements, and our expansion into other financial services categories," the company says. It plans to post-train its models to "find, interpret, and use this data like we know the best analysts can." The initial focus is investment banking and equity research, where OpenAI says reliable access to data and high-quality artifact creation proved to be the biggest pain points for partner teams.
Compliance as a feature
Financial institutions operate under strict obligations around material non-public information and client confidentiality, and OpenAI has built the product on top of ChatGPT Enterprise's security stack: SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, and role-based access controls.
Business data is not used to train OpenAI's models by default. Data is encrypted at rest and in transit, and administrators can configure workspace retention. Compliance teams can export supported workspace logs through the OpenAI Compliance Platform into their existing audit and investigation workflows. Firms can manage access to skills and apps by role, enable or disable supported app read and write actions, and create multiple workspaces to enforce information barriers.
A platform play, not just a product
OpenAI frames the launch as one piece of a broader strategy rather than a complete offering. "We recognize that it will require a range of solutions to address the needs of the finance industry," the company says, pointing to its API as the route for financial services firms and developers to build specialized applications. The division of labor, in OpenAI's telling: "OpenAI brings frontier models and the capabilities to put them to work. Financial institutions, data providers, and software partners bring specialized expertise, trusted information, and customer relationships."
The stakes are considerable. Investment banking and equity research are information-processing businesses where labor costs dominate, and competitors including Anthropic and Google have been courting the same regulated enterprise customers. By bundling licensed data, post-trained models, governance controls, and firm-standard output templates into one product, OpenAI is betting that vertical depth — not raw model capability alone — will decide which AI vendor banks standardize on.
With design partners Morgan Stanley and Evercore already steering post-training and roadmap decisions, and expansion into additional financial services categories on the way, ChatGPT for Financial Services is less a finished product than the opening move in a sustained push to become default infrastructure for the financial industry's analytical work.
