OpenAI Acquires Software Applications Inc., Maker of Mac AI App Sky

OpenAI has acquired Software Applications Incorporated, the company behind Sky, a natural language interface for the Mac that understands what is on a user's screen and can take action inside their apps.

OpenAI announced the deal in a post framed around the idea that AI progress depends on interfaces, not just intelligence. "AI progress isn't only about advancing intelligence—it's about unlocking it through interfaces that understand context, adapt to your intent, and work seamlessly," the company wrote.

Sky runs alongside the user on macOS, whether they are "writing, planning, coding, or managing your day," according to the announcement. The app reads on-screen context and executes actions through the user's installed applications. OpenAI says it will bring Sky's deep macOS integration and product craft into ChatGPT, and that every member of the Software Applications Incorporated team will join OpenAI.

Nick Turley, VP and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, positioned the acquisition as a step toward making ChatGPT an agent rather than a chat window. Sky's deep integration with the Mac accelerates our vision of bringing AI directly into the tools people use every day," Turley said in the announcement.

Ari Weinstein, Co-Founder and CEO of Software Applications Incorporated, described Sky as the culmination of a long-standing ambition to make computers more responsive to their users. "We've always wanted computers to be more empowering, customizable, and intuitive. With LLMs, we can finally put the pieces together. That's why we built Sky, an AI experience that floats over your desktop to help you think and create. We're thrilled to join OpenAI to bring that vision to hundreds of millions of people," Weinstein said.

Why it matters

The acquisition lands in a crowded and contested category: AI assistants that operate inside the operating system rather than in a browser tab. Deep OS-level integration is a functional moat for whoever gets it right. Apple is building its own on-device AI features into macOS, and rivals including Anthropic and Google are racing to ship agents that can control desktop applications. Buying Sky gives OpenAI a proven macOS product and a team that has already solved hard problems in screen understanding and app automation.

It also signals where ChatGPT is heading. Turley's statement — that ChatGPT should "help you get things done" rather than just respond to prompts — aligns with OpenAI's broader push into agentic products. Sky's capability set, including screen awareness and cross-app action, maps directly onto that roadmap.

The deal matters for distribution, too. Weinstein explicitly frames the goal as bringing Sky's vision to "hundreds of millions of people," which is the scale ChatGPT already operates at. A polished native Mac experience could strengthen OpenAI's position on a platform where Apple's own AI offerings have direct privileged access.

Governance disclosure

The announcement includes an unusual disclosure. An investment fund associated with Sam Altman held a passive investment in Software Applications Incorporated prior to the acquisition. OpenAI states the deal was led by Nick Turley and Fidji Simo, who joined OpenAI as Chief Product Officer in 2025, and that it was approved by the independent Transaction and Audit Committees of OpenAI's board of directors.

The disclosure reflects heightened scrutiny of Altman's personal financial entanglements, which have drawn criticism from former board members and outside observers since his brief ouster and return in late 2023. Routing the approval through independent board committees is the governance mechanism OpenAI has committed to using for transactions involving related-party interests.

OpenAI did not disclose the acquisition price, and no timeline was given for integrating Sky's capabilities into ChatGPT. The company closed its announcement with a promise of "more updates as we get to work integrating Sky's capabilities." For users of ChatGPT on the Mac, the near-term question is how quickly screen-aware, app-controlling features move from a standalone product into the main client — and whether OpenAI can match the integration speed of platform owners like Apple.
