Google has released Gemini 4 Argon, its long-awaited frontier model, and claims it outperforms GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5.5 across a range of benchmarks.
The launch ends months on the sidelines of the frontier AI race for Google. In its announcement, the company says Argon delivers "frontier reasoning and improved performance across complex workflows." It also says the new model cuts down on hedging, repetition, and the clichés that continue to plague AI chatbots.
Google claims Argon beats rival models like GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, and Claude Opus 5.5 across benchmarks covering coding, cybersecurity, science, finance, and law. The company says it is already putting Argon to use internally.
For developers, enterprises, and everyday users of the Gemini app, the release signals that Google intends to remain a contender at the top of the AI market rather than cede the frontier to OpenAI and Anthropic. Benchmark claims from the vendor itself will now face the usual round of independent testing.
The name to watch in the coming weeks is Argon — and whether third-party evaluations confirm Google's claim that it leads the frontier pack.
