Google DeepMind has launched a National Partnership for AI with Indian government bodies and local institutions, pairing a $30 million Google.org Impact Challenge for AI-driven science with frontier model access for the country's researchers and a nationwide push to put Gemini in classrooms.
The announcement landed at the India Summit this week, the fourth global AI summit convening governments, companies and civil society. Google DeepMind framed the deal as the latest step in its National Partnerships for AI initiative, which already includes collaborations with the US and UK governments and aims to give countries access to frontier AI capabilities in service of national priorities in science, education, resilience and public services.
India is a strategic prize for any frontier lab. It is the fourth largest adopter of AlphaFold globally, with more than 180,000 researchers using the protein-structure prediction system today, and it leads the world in daily Gemini usage by students, according to Google. The country also became the third largest generator of solar energy globally in 2023 and has set a target of installing 500 GW of renewable capacity by 2030 — a timeline Google wants its AI models to help meet.
Science: frontier models for 180,000-plus researchers
Google DeepMind, Google Research and Google.org will partner with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) to accelerate the adoption of AI models in Indian science. The deal includes access to frontier AI for Science models, support for hackathons and community contests, and training and mentorship for students, researchers and early-career scientists.
Three toolsets headline the offer. AlphaGenome helps scientists understand how mutations in human DNA sequences affect a wide range of gene functions. AI Co-scientist is a multi-agent system that acts as a virtual scientific collaborator. Earth AI is a collection of models built on Gemini's advanced reasoning that support enterprises, nonprofits and cities with tasks ranging from environmental monitoring to disaster response.
The $30 million Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Science is an open call for researchers, nonprofits and social enterprises in India and around the world that are using AI to pursue scientific breakthroughs. Selected awardees will join a Google.org Accelerator, receiving engineering support, expert mentorship and infrastructure from Google DeepMind and Google Research to turn their concepts into what Google describes as scalable discoveries.
Education: two million textbooks get QR codes and custom Gems
Google's recent survey with Ipsos found that learning is the top motivation for using AI globally, and nowhere more so than India. At City Montessori School in Lucknow, teachers have integrated Guided Learning into math classes for Grade 8-9 students. An early analysis of a randomized control study conducted by Fab AI found that in almost three out of every four conversations on Gemini, students sought to develop their understanding rather than get a quick answer or shortcut.
Google is now scaling that model through three programs.
With Atal Tinkering Labs, which serves more than 10,000 Indian schools and 11 million students, Google will help incorporate robotics and coding into local curricula, integrate Gemini into teacher workflows, and build a guardrailed AI assistant for students grounded in national curriculum standards. The assistant has concrete classroom uses: teachers can get real-time tips to help students fix a robot missing a part with readily available materials, or mend a broken circuit design, by pointing a camera at it or asking Gemini in chat.
In what Google calls a first-of-its-kind partnership with PM Publishers Pvt. Ltd., a K-12 textbook publisher in India, Gemini will transform two million static textbooks into AI-powered interactive journeys across more than 250 titles and 2,000 schools. Each book carries a QR code that students scan to access a custom Gem — a specialized version of the Gemini model — that acts as an expert assistant on the subject, providing summaries and responses based on the book's contents.
On language, Google is building on a recent $2 million founding Google.org contribution to establish the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay, aiming to incorporate India's linguistic diversity into AI as the technology advances globally.
These efforts extend the reach of Experience AI, a literacy program Google DeepMind developed with the Raspberry Pi Foundation that has already reached up to 300,000 students and 8,000 teachers in India.
Agriculture and energy: 8% forecast gains on the grid
The science and education partnerships build on existing Google collaborations with Indian organizations in agriculture and energy security. Indian startups, institutions including the Council on Energy, Environment and Water (CEEW), and state and central government entities are using the APIs of Google's freely available Agri AI models to enhance agricultural resilience, crop productivity and farmer incomes. The startup TerraStack is using Google AI to combine satellite, crop and weather data into hyper-local insights that help farmers make better decisions.
On energy, Google recently announced a growing collaboration with Open Climate Fix to integrate its WeatherNext AI models into India's electricity grid operations. The goal is to improve the accuracy of renewable energy forecasts, help grid operators manage volatility and support India's clean energy targets. Testing of WeatherNext integrated into Open Climate Fix's wind generation forecast showed up to an 8% accuracy improvement in forecast performance — a meaningful margin for grid operators balancing variable solar and wind supply toward the 500 GW by 2030 target.
The stakes
The partnership signals how frontier labs are now competing for government alignment as aggressively as for customers. Google DeepMind positions its US and UK government collaborations as proof of the model; India, hosting the fourth global AI summit, becomes the third leg of that strategy and a test of whether national partnerships can convert model access into measurable outcomes in science output, learning gains and grid reliability.
Google itself struck a cautious note on what comes next. "AI's global impact is inevitable, but its success is not," the company said, adding that it is committing to deep local collaboration with India's government bodies and institutions "to ensure AI delivers tangible results across the subcontinent — and the world." The $30 million Impact Challenge, the ANRF partnership and two million interactive textbooks are now the instruments by which that claim will be measured.
