Why it matters

  • ChatGPT Ads reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch, per OpenAI's end-of-August announcement.
  • Starting today, ChatGPT Ads roll out to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
  • ChatGPT Ads are now available in over 60 countries.
  • Tens of thousands of advertisers already run campaigns on the platform.
  • Ads show only to Free and Go plan users; Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free.

ChatGPT Ads hit a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch, and today OpenAI is expanding the advertising product to Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan. The rollout makes ChatGPT Ads available in more than 60 countries, according to the company's announcement, with tens of thousands of advertisers already running campaigns on the platform.

The expansion follows earlier launches across Asia Pacific, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and India. With today's move, OpenAI extends the reach of its advertising business — a business that has scaled faster than most digital ad launches in recent memory — to businesses of all sizes across the region.

The stakes are considerable. OpenAI has positioned advertising as a way to subsidize free and low-cost access to ChatGPT while it builds a consumer platform with hundreds of millions of users. The company frames it as mission-driven: "Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, and Ads help democratize access to intelligence by supporting free and low-cost access to ChatGPT."

Who can advertise, and how?

Advertisers in the seven new markets can access ChatGPT Ads through three routes:

  • The OpenAI Ads Solutions team, working directly with brands
  • Agency partners, including dentsu, Havas Media, Omnicom Media, Publicis Groupe, and WPP
  • Self-service access through Ads Manager at ads.openai.com, available to eligible businesses

The inclusion of the five major holding companies — dentsu, Havas, Omnicom, Publicis, and WPP — signals that OpenAI wants large brand budgets from day one in these markets, not just long-tail self-service spend.

Which users will see ads?

The ad experience follows the same rules OpenAI established in existing markets. Ads appear only for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free.

That tiering matters for both revenue and trust. OpenAI is betting that a large free user base tolerates clearly labeled advertising in exchange for access to a frontier AI product, while paying subscribers get a clean experience. The company says this structure "help[s] democratize access to intelligence" by keeping low-cost options viable.

Why does OpenAI think ads belong in a chatbot?

The company's argument rests on user intent. People come to ChatGPT with concrete goals — planning a trip, choosing business software, furnishing a home. Through conversation, they explain what they want to accomplish, what matters to them, and the constraints they face.

In OpenAI's framing, this creates a new marketing channel: "ChatGPT Ads give marketers an opportunity to reach people as they explore and evaluate their options. By introducing relevant products and services, ads can be useful in the moments that spur discovery and shape decisions."

That positioning puts ChatGPT in competition with search advertising, where intent-driven queries command the highest prices in digital marketing. If OpenAI can capture even a fraction of high-intent commercial conversations, the revenue opportunity extends well beyond the current $1 billion run rate.

What guardrails has OpenAI put in place?

OpenAI acknowledges that advertising inside an AI assistant carries trust risks, and it has published a set of ads principles to govern the product. The company makes four specific commitments:

  • Conversations stay private from advertisers, and OpenAI never sells customer data
  • Ads are always clearly labeled and visually separate from ChatGPT's answers
  • Advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides
  • Users control ad personalization, and ad-free paid plans remain available

The separation between ads and answers is the most consequential of these commitments. If users came to believe that sponsored content shaped ChatGPT's responses, the product's core value as a trusted assistant would erode. OpenAI states its goal plainly: "ads should be useful to people as they pursue their goals and make decisions, while also being effective for the businesses that advertise with us."

How fast has the business grown?

The growth numbers stand out. At the end of August, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads had reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in less than 200 days after launch. Tens of thousands of advertisers now run campaigns on the platform, and many of them reach users across multiple countries.

Few advertising products have scaled to a nine-figure run rate that quickly. The figure also gives context for today's expansion: each new market adds free-plan users and advertiser demand simultaneously, compounding both sides of the marketplace.

Southeast Asia specifically offers a large, mobile-first, price-sensitive user base — precisely the demographic that free, ad-supported access is designed to serve. Taiwan adds a mature digital advertising market to the mix.

What comes next?

OpenAI describes its progress so far as "only the first chapter in what ChatGPT Ads will become." Over the next few months, the company says it will continue expanding into new markets and will build new ad formats, optimization tools, and measurement solutions.

The measurement point deserves attention. Advertisers allocate budgets based on provable returns, and robust measurement tooling is what separates durable ad platforms from experimental ones. OpenAI says its ongoing work remains focused on four priorities: broadening access to AI, protecting the trust people place in ChatGPT, delivering useful ads, and helping businesses achieve their goals.
