Apple's iOS 27.2 Gives Siri Memory and Five New Languages

Apple's iOS 27.2 gives Siri conversation memory, five new languages, SynthID photo watermarks, and Apple Pencil support on the iPhone Duo foldable — with MacBook Pro touch hints in the code.

Why it matters

  • Apple released iOS 27.2 and macOS 27.2 today with a Siri memory feature that can "recall your past conversations."
  • Siri AI now supports French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish, but remains unavailable in Europe and mainland China.
  • iOS 27.2 adds Apple Pencil support on the iPhone Duo foldable and SynthID watermarking in Photos.
  • macOS 27.2 beta code contains gesture recognition references in Photos, Notes, and Safari, possibly tied to touch support on a next MacBook Pro.
  • Siri AI requires iPhone 16 models or later, or iPhone 15 Pro / iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Apple's iOS 27.2, released today, gives Siri a memory feature that lets it "recall your past conversations" and reference them in later chats — the centerpiece of an AI-heavy update rolling out across iOS, macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS.

The release is one of Apple's most Siri-focused software drops in years, arriving as the company pushes its Siri AI features to a wider audience. Siri AI is now available in five more languages beyond English: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish — a rollout Apple had previously announced. The expansion stops short of full global reach, though. Siri AI remains unavailable in Europe and mainland China.

What can Siri actually do now?

The headline change is memory. Siri can now keep track of what you've discussed before and bring it back up when relevant. Apple describes the feature as the ability to "recall your past conversations." The assistant can also pull from a broader set of personal data when answering, including:

  • Voicemails
  • Messages attachments
  • Additional data sources beyond what Siri could previously access

The flip side is a new privacy control. An "Excluded Apps" option lets users "choose which apps Siri, Search, and suggestions can access." That gives users a way to wall off specific apps from Apple's AI and its suggestions engine — a meaningful concession at a time when AI companies face mounting scrutiny over how personal data feeds their systems.

Context-aware Messages suggestions and SynthID watermarks

Beyond memory, iOS 27.2 adds context-aware suggestions within Messages. One example: a message inviting you to something can be turned into a calendar entry. It's the kind of small, practical automation Apple has been steadily layering into its operating systems.

Photos gains SynthID watermarking support. The feature, originally developed by Google, embeds invisible identifiers into AI-generated imagery so it can be recognized as synthetic. Its arrival in Apple's Photos app signals the company's engagement with provenance standards for AI content.

The Apple TV app now supports user profiles. And Apple Music gets new branding — a visual refresh that also appears on visionOS 27.2.

One hardware-related item stands out: previously promised Apple Pencil support has arrived on the iPhone Duo, Apple's foldable. It's the completion of a commitment Apple made when the foldable was first detailed.

What about macOS, watchOS, and visionOS?

macOS Golden Gate 27.2 largely mirrors the iOS release. It includes contextual memory for Siri and the same five additional Siri AI languages, plus what Apple describes only as miscellaneous bug fixes.

The Apple Watch update is similarly Siri-centric — mostly the same Siri-related additions as the iPhone release. visionOS 27.2 adds the new languages and the updated Music icon.

Apple's own notes for iOS 27.2 specify that Siri AI requires an iPhone 16 model or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max. That device cutoff leaves older iPhones — including the standard iPhone 15 — without the new AI features, a limitation Apple has maintained since its AI rollout began.

What do those gesture references mean for the next MacBook Pro?

The most forward-looking detail was hiding in the betas. As previously discovered in the beta releases of macOS 27.2, the update contains references to new gesture recognition capabilities in applications like Photos, Notes, and Safari.

Those references may be connected to unconfirmed reports of touch support on the next MacBook Pro refresh. That machine may be revealed at a scheduled public briefing this Wednesday, according to the reports. Apple has not confirmed the touch-enabled MacBook Pro, and the software references alone don't prove it — but shipping gesture recognition hooks in a production OS is the kind of groundwork that typically precedes new hardware.

Why this release matters

Two stakes define the update. First, the language expansion moves Siri AI beyond English for the first time in this generation, a necessary step if Apple wants to compete with Google's and Samsung's multilingual assistants outside the US. The continued absence in Europe and mainland China shows regulatory and regional constraints still constrain that ambition — Apple's AI features have faced a slower rollout in the EU under the Digital Markets Act, and China requires alternative local AI partners.

Second, the memory feature and the "Excluded Apps" control arrive as regulators and users press AI companies on data use. Apple is offering recall and personal-data access while pairing them with explicit opt-out controls — a balance that will shape how its AI features land with privacy-focused customers.

If Wednesday's briefing does bring a touch-capable MacBook Pro, the gesture references in 27.2 will look, in hindsight, like the software telling us before the hardware did.
