Anthropic folds Claude Cowork back into Claude chat

Anthropic is merging Claude Cowork into the main Claude chat interface, collapsing its separate agentic workspace into a single product starting with Pro and Max plans over the coming weeks, with more plans to follow.

"You don't have to choose where a task goes. Claude does more of the work," Anthropic said in its announcement. The consolidation also applies to Artifacts.

The move ends a short-lived split in Anthropic's product line. The company launched Cowork in January as a non-coding counterpart to Claude Code, giving general productivity tasks a heavier-lift agent with more capabilities than plain chat. In July, Anthropic moved Cowork to the cloud, noting that an overwhelming majority of tasks run through it were not coding-related. Managing one Claude entity with built-in agentic capabilities now looks simpler than maintaining two.

"We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged," Anthropic said. "Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have."

The merge matters beyond tidier packaging. Anthropic is competing with OpenAI and Google to become the default workspace where AI generates and stores documents, not just answers questions. Folding Cowork, Design and documents into one interface positions Claude as a single starting point for projects — closer to an AI-first rival to Google's suite than a chatbot.

Alongside the merge, Anthropic launched Claude Docs. Users can also access Claude Design and generate slides, which Anthropic said can be "present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF." Docs, Slides and Design are in beta for paid plans. OpenAI circulated rumors last summer that it had a similar suite ambition, though the current status of those plans is unclear.

Everything users create now lives in one place. "Anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone," Anthropic said. The separate tools function more like modes within a single interface than standalone apps that cannot pick up where another left off.

Users who never adopted Cowork have little reason to worry. Anthropic said the regular chat experience should not change, and Claude Design remains available as a standalone tool.
