AMD Buys Fei-Fei Li's World Labs for $8.2 Billion in All-Stock Deal

AMD announced today that it is acquiring World Labs, the AI research lab co-founded by Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth approximately $8.2 billion.

The price is a striking figure for a company that only launched in 2024 and reached a $1 billion valuation within months. It signals how far AMD is willing to go to buy a credible position in frontier AI research, an area where rivals like Nvidia have paired hardware dominance with deep investment in models and software ecosystems.

World Labs made its name in an emerging corner of the field: world generation. The startup launched its first commercial product, a model called Marble, in 2025. Marble lets users build interactive 3D worlds from a single prompt — an approach the company has positioned as the next AI frontier, on the theory that models which understand and generate spatial environments will matter as much as models that generate text or images.

The deal is expected to close by the end of the year.

As part of the acquisition, Li will join AMD as EVP and chief scientist, reporting directly to AMD CEO Lisa Su. The World Labs team will "continue to focus on advancing AI model research," according to AMD's announcement. Bringing in a researcher of Li's stature — she is one of the most prominent figures in modern AI — gives AMD both a research organization and a public face for its ambitions in the field.

The structure of the deal also matters. An all-stock transaction worth $8.2 billion represents a major bet by AMD leadership that World Labs' technology and talent will compound the value of the combined company, rather than a cash payout that would simply deplete reserves. For World Labs' investors, who backed the startup at a $1 billion valuation at launch, the return reflects how quickly demand for spatial AI capabilities has escalated.

The acquisition lands at a moment when the AI industry is consolidating around a small number of players with both compute and model expertise. Chipmakers have increasingly moved to absorb AI labs rather than merely supply them, betting that the next generation of AI workloads — including 3D world generation — will require tightly coupled hardware and software design. Marble's interactive 3D worlds are exactly the kind of workload that could drive demand for new classes of accelerated computing.

Li's new role reporting directly to Su also places research leadership at the top of AMD's org chart, a signal of how the company intends to prioritize model development going forward. The expectation that the deal closes by year-end means integration could begin well before that point.

For the broader market, the deal sets a precedent: a research lab founded in 2024 with one commercial product command an $8.2 billion exit. Whether World Labs' world generation technology can justify that price under AMD's roof will be one of the defining tests of the acquisition — and of the bet that 3D-native AI becomes a core computing paradigm rather than a niche.
