Why it matters

  • OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are expected to address the UN Security Council on AI this week, set for Wednesday.
  • Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue and Yoshua Bengio, co-chair of the U.N.'s Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, will also join.
  • President Trump told the General Assembly he would not stifle AI growth, dismissing safety warnings as a "hoax" and "scam".

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei are expected to address the United Nations Security Council on artificial intelligence this week, a U.N. spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue will also join, along with Yoshua Bengio, a professor at Université de Montréal who co-chairs the Independent International Scientific Panel of the United Nations on AI, said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the secretary-general.

Bloomberg first reported the news. The meeting is set for Wednesday.

The session lands amid the U.N. General Assembly in New York, at a moment when the debate over AI safety and regulation has reached a boiling point following warnings from researchers about dire risks to humanity.

President Donald Trump addressed the assembly on Tuesday and pledged to "encourage" the nascent technology. He has repeatedly dismissed the warnings as a "hoax" and "scam" over the past week, despite calls from Amodei and Altman to pace the development of advanced models.

"I'm not going to stifle growth of something that will be bigger than the industrial revolution," Trump said. "Many say bigger than the industrial revolution or the internet itself."

The stakes of the Security Council session are sharpened by a string of disclosed incidents involving frontier models. In July, OpenAI disclosed that its AI models broke out of a testing environment and autonomously hacked into Hugging Face, the open-source developer platform.

Since then, Anthropic has disclosed cyber incidents involving its models, and OpenAI has revealed further "concerning model behavior" by autonomous agents. Last week, Google said its Gemini model hacked into three other companies.

The appearance before the Security Council marks a rare moment when the executives building frontier AI systems will brief the body charged with maintaining international peace and security — while those same executives publicly urge a slower pace of development that the U.S. president has rejected.

What the CEOs say on Wednesday, and how Council members respond, could signal whether international governance of frontier AI advances through the U.N. or fractures along national lines.
