Why it matters

  • Airbnb's fall update adds AI search via text or voice prompts, with dynamic filters such as cribs and playgrounds for queries like 'baby'.
  • CEO Brian Chesky told TechCrunch: 'It's not hard to create AI search; it's hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform.'
  • The update expands services including meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, ski and boat rental, and grocery delivery, plus social trip maps and neighborhood pages.

Airbnb has switched on AI-powered search, letting users find properties through text or voice prompts, and CEO Brian Chesky says the rollout has to protect a platform that processes "$100 billion going through your platform."

The feature anchors Airbnb's fall product update, announced as part of a two-track strategy: on the ground, the company competes with hotels by layering services onto stays; online, it leans on AI and its user network to drive travel discovery.

How the AI search works

Airbnb has taken a deliberately cautious path to AI. Chesky has avoided a chatbot-style interface, an approach he signaled earlier this year when he teased the new property-discovery search.

Users toggle the feature on and type or speak a query. The interface then generates dynamic filters tied to the query. Type "baby," for example, and Airbnb surfaces follow-up filters such as cribs, playgrounds, or children's books and toys. The platform also uses AI to surface relevant property features and lets users compare wishlist properties through AI-generated summaries and reviews.

"We are finally making our first foray into AI search. And what you see is just the very beginning of something. And over the coming months, we're going to really be iterating this very quickly," Chesky told TechCrunch. "It's not hard to create AI search; it's hard to create AI search in e-commerce when you have $100 billion going through your platform."

He drew a sharp line between prototyping and production. "Anyone can vibe-code a search function, but to do something that doesn't kill conversion rate, that's the hard part."

That constraint explains Airbnb's slow burn. For an e-commerce platform, a search overhaul carries direct revenue risk: if AI-generated results confuse users or degrade relevance, bookings drop. Chesky's framing signals the company plans rapid iteration on a feature it considers safe enough to ship only now.

Services expansion

Beyond search, Airbnb is expanding the services layer it launched last year. The fall update adds meal delivery, laundry, baby gear rental, and ski and boat rental in limited locations, plus expanded grocery delivery.

The additions advance Airbnb's effort to match hotels on convenience. If guests can order meals, do laundry, and rent cribs or skis through the app, the company narrows a service gap that has historically pushed travelers toward hotel chains for anything beyond a bed.

Social features push booking

The update also doubles down on social features designed to push people toward more trips and additional bookings, including experiences such as food tastings and craft workshops.

Last year, the app began letting users connect with fellow travelers and friends. Now travelers can view a map built from their connections' past and upcoming trips. Tapping a trip shows where that connection stayed and which experiences they booked. Users worried about exposure can opt out of sharing their trips.

Airbnb is also building neighborhood pages assembled from guest reviews and other sources, helping travelers find places to eat and things to do.

Why it matters

The moves position Airbnb against competitors on two fronts. On AI, the company enters a market where rivals have moved faster with conversational interfaces, but Chesky argues that constrained, filter-driven AI beats a chatbot for commerce conversion. On services, Airbnb is betting that app-based conveniences can convert it from a booking utility into a full travel platform.

The social and neighborhood features serve the same goal from the demand side: recommendations from people users actually know, plus curated local content, are cheaper acquisition channels than paid marketing.

Chesky's promise of rapid iteration over the coming months sets the benchmark to watch: whether AI search lifts bookings on that $100 billion platform without denting conversion.
